Hey
Spellings: hey aleph, heh heh or hey yoad
The fifth letter symbolizes a window, which allows light in, but
doesn’t allow beings to enter or depart. This denotes the dimension
of spiritual emanation, which is a similar sort of window in the
heart or soul, one through which all beings are in communion and
unity. In this perspective Hey represents spirituality in general.
The shape of the letter signifies ‘a window high above’, which
in this case means spiritually as well as physically.
Hey can also be seen as dalet with ‘an unattached leg’, thought
and speech combining to bring about action (the leg).
Hey is fundamentally expressive, as is the sound made when we
speak it. We can understand it analagously as the expression of
breath one might use to fog a mirror. Exhaling with ha or hhh results
in myriads of droplets of mist, which are at once reflected in
the mirror, themselves (because of being on the mirror) and each
other. From a single gesture a sublime webwork of interrelated
and interreflective participants emerges. This recalls the ‘breath
of God’ which similarly results in universes and beings —
all of which inwardly and outwardly reflect their basis and each
other in endless dimensions.
The relationship between geemel and dalet (a benefactor chasing
a poor person to bestow benefits) is resolved in hay, which is
essentially dalet with ‘an extra leg’ — or ‘new ways of moving
and relating’.
As the second of the ‘three fathers’ hey relates to the creative
expression of yoad as a unique form of ‘breathing’. Imagine that
all beings
and entities in space and time collapse to perfect unity, and re-expand
to sublime distinction centillions of times per instant — and that
this process gains speed exponentially. This is merely an analogy,
but grants us an image of what this incredible and awe-inspiring
‘breathing of God’ might be like. In the name YHVH, the first hey
can be understood as representing God’s creative in-and-exhallation
from the heavenly (God’s) perspective. It is this supernal hyperactivity
which drives and replenishes and unifies all universes.
