S(h)een
Spelling: s(h)een yoad nune
S(h)een is formed of three vahvs, each beginning with a yoad,
sharing a common base. It is the third of the three mothers, and
represents transformation through a change of form, both as fire,
and as tooth. In both cases, the change is from material (mother
= matter) to energy or spirit. This relates to the transformation
of the soul, as it denigrates the overt aspects of physical reality
and wealth for the seemingly humble yet profoundly vital relationship
with the divine. This is the process of perfection (sheen lahmed
mame), which is also the transport of peace — shalom — (sheen lahmed
vahv mame).
In its
form we can see conflict and resolution, as two parties on either
side
are
unified
by a mediator
in the center — the peacemaker. In its shape we can see the basic
connotation of numerism, and many number names or indications of
number begin with this letter in Hebrew.
From the base, three things rise to receive the graces of the
Holy One, like flowers or flames. This ‘threefold rising’ can
be interpreted many ways, but we can see that aspects of the archetypal,
existential, and supernal are really one in their true basis, and
thus each aspect is worthy of attention, care, and prosperous embodiment.
S(h)een acts as the sound of ‘s’ (dot above leftmost mark) and
also ‘sh’ (dot above rightmost mark) depending upon its marking.
Both sounds are reminiscent of
the
hissing of
fire,
and also the sounds made by snakes. (Seen raysh pay) is the
word for burn in Hebrew, and sheen aleph vahv lahmed is the word
for sheol — the grave, the underworld — what we refer
to as ‘hell’ in English. Many of the ‘sh’ words in Hebrew deal
with dark matters, execution, slaughter, punishment, to discard.
breaking, to take captive, violence, etc.
As the supernal accomplishment of its archetypal and existential
aspects (geemel and lahmed), s(h)een represents at once travel
toward holiness and breaking through barriers to spiritual ascension,
to arrive at last before the throne of the king. The burdens and
blessings of Earthly incarnation are unified as a transforming
‘flame’ and as we suffer, we are, in an invisible dimension, accruing
profound character and abundance. The indwelling light of our spiritual
source is not ‘visiting punishment’ upon us, but instead ‘driving
us’ toward a far better reward than any we could arrange or conceive
of. We are undergoing a process of refinement, that draws us in
heart, body, mind, and spirit, ever closer to the goals our celestial
parent desires us to have and know, in person.
